Frequently asked questions.
Do you make drum sets?
We have stopped making modern drum kits. Partially due to cost, but also due to lack of interest on our part. The exceptions are rope tension kits and themed kits with no budget constraints.
Will you refinish my modern drum set?
The quick answer is, no. The longer answer is, considering the amount of labor required, it’s cheaper to just buy a new kit.
How long does it take to make a rope tension snare drum?
Our current turn around time is 3-6 months based on current orders, availability of supplies, and labor. The type of finish is a large determining factor as spray finishes are built up over multiple days and humidity can cause delays. Then cure time, wet sanding, buffing, etc.
Are Calderwood drums made in the USA?
All of our drums are handcrafted in a former shoe shank factory located in Eastern Massachusetts and we’ve gone to great efforts to source parts and materials from US based manufacturers.
Keller shells (NH), Nordic shells (MN), New England Rope (MA), Harrison Casting Co. (RI), Evans (NY), Remo (CA), TotalBoat (RI), McMaster-Carr (IL) … just to name a few.
What is the Finish?
For spray finishes, we are using TotalBoat Halcyon Water Based Marine Varnish. It’s UV stable, hard enough to resist scratches/abrasions, flexible enough for wood movement, and tough enough for all weather conditions.
For wax finishes, we are currently testing several two-part hard wax oil finishes.
For shell interiors, we use Minwax polyurethane.
What is the Rope?
We generally use a 3-Strand Filament Polyester, which is used for sailing vessels. It offers lower stretch than nylon rope with good abrasion resistance and UV resistance. We also have faux hemp and can source natural fibers for reenactment instruments.
